Prop & Costume Making

6 November 2015 (2)

Okay now I shall give y'all the overall method at which I any of my props and costumes heheh (I digressed far and wide on the previous post, didn't I.)

1) The obvious first step in making any props is to find the reference pictures in the internet be it the official ones or the fanarts though I prefer official ones for accuracy's sake, but at the same time some parts cannot be seen so for those I'll seek out fanarts to better see the parts

2) Sketch out the parts that you will need to make. In the sketch, thing to include are(the list is not exhaustive):
  • the structure of the prop (be it in 3D or in a few sketches with the different points of views)
  • the detail that will be included like the designs on the props, if there is any
  • the desired measurements of the props *
  • the material of which you will be using for the props
* One thing that you'll have to consider carefully is the measurements. When a person say that they want their props to be "accurate", there are 2 side to seeing this. First of all, what do you mean by "accurate"?
Do you mean accurate as in the props to be as accurate to the details and measurements that are given 'officially'?
Or do you mean accurate as in proportion to YOUR body?
To me, that is, would think that the latter is more preferable, especially during photoshoots. In photoshoots, it is not as if the audience can accurately measure the length of say, your katana to say 'hey that is not the accurate length!' because the dimensions of the picture is different in picture than in real life. Should you follow the accuracy of the measurements provided 'officially' (the first choice), then your Katana may look extremely humongous or too small especially if you aren't the same in height/weight/bodyshape as the characters. So yeap, measure the props dimension in relative to YOUR body and do the maths such that the props are proportional and customised to your body to have the accuracy in photographs.
((personal lesson though, I realised my Uwachigatana for Kasen Kanesada was WAYYY too long for me and it made it look like a Oodachi instead hahahahaha well.....))

3) After sketching the props, make a newspaper prototype! Newspapers are like my best friends, we have our fight and moments but they do their function well in giving a flimsy example of how the props will turn out like in their raw form. The function of the newspaper prototype is so that you do not waste your precious actual materials should you cut or make any parts wrongly. So the newspaper is like an early indication if your measurement had gone wrong somewhere.

4) After making sure that there isn't any problem with the measurements through the prototypes, place the newspaper on top of your desired material and proceed to cut with caution. Very much caution for the scarce resources you have...

5) Stick them all together with glue, or with costumes, sew them together!
This part has a lot more technical detail especially for sewing, but it is entirely up to you at how detailed and tedious you would like your method to be haha...

6) Paint!
There are many ways you can choose to paint, but in general I have only used spray paints and acrylic paints. Spray paints are fun but if you do not spray evenly, the colour would be uneven and may not cover every part of the surface. Hence all in all I think acrylic paints are still the best because it is versatile and can paint over almost every surface (tho when it is dried, it hardens haha).

7) Priming and final touches...
To set the paint and add in the final touches to make the prop realistic or prettier~

8) Trying out~
Put on the prop/costume and marvel at your work hahaaha

DONE!

Can you tell I kinda gave up writing so much halfway through the post. HAHA, well this was supposed to be for Murasame prop-making but if I were to lump everything the post will be too long so I've decided to separate the posts to the technical parts and then to the character specific ones.
Next post will be about how I made my props based on the steps I've said above! :D
