Wig washing

Hello again~

So, let's push the results aside for the moment. While I was brooding over my results, I decided to do some work - not work work because I was so depressed, I didn't want to see my bosses hahaha - that is, to wash my wigs. I realised I have a lot of wigs and I have have yet to wash them and decided to wash them all in one shot. My first wig - Nezumi's wig - was washed once by me because the condition when I received it was horrendous. I decided to wash it again because I spammed hair spray to keep the ponytail spikes up when I was cosplaying as Nezumi in AFA'14 Day 3. Besides, it is good practice to wash your wig once in a while so it does not smell hahaha... just not too often like you do with our own hair.

So here's how I washed my wig!

Things needed / used (not a hard-fast rule, it is just how I did the mass wig wash haha..)

  1. Light Shampoo - I used Johnson's Baby Shampoo for this. A strong shampoo miiight damage the wig so just to be save, use a gentle one.
  2. Conditioner - I don' think babies use conditioners haha so I used my own conditioner in small amounts
  3. 2 Pails - Or if your sink has a stopper, it's good enough too! I used one pail and my sink to wash the wigs
  4. A Spray head
  5. Wig stand / mannequin head / Wig Holder / idk , container? for holding the wig to dry it after wash
  6. WATERRRR
  7. and your wig of course
  8. not forgetting your hands
So before we begin, we need some preparations:
  1. Fill the 2 pails with about a quarter of water, as long as the wig can fully submerge in the water.
  2. Pump about 3 pumps of shampoo into one of the pail, stirring it so that the shampoo is evenly diffused. Let's name this pail "Shampoo Pail"
  3. Squeeze about 2 inches of conditioner out and stir it into the other pail evenly, making sure that the clumps are diffused properly. Let's name this pail the "Conditioner Pail" - or in my case, since I used the sink for this, I shall name it the "Conditioner Sink"
  4. Get the spray head ready for rinsing the wigs

This is so called my Conditioner Sink. On the top left is the light shampoo I used and on the right is the conditioner.

With all preparations done, let's begin!
  1. Rinse* the wig with the spray head first, making sure to remove as much debris as possible
  2. squeeze out the water from the wig
  3. submerge the wig into the pail with shampoo, give it a gentle swirl in circular motion so that every part of the wig comes into contact with the water with shampoo
  4. Leave it for about 5 minutes for the shampoo to do its magic
  5. After 5 minutes, use your fingers to gently remove debris or clump remains of hair spray and hair products you might have used on your wig. DO NOT try to untangle the tangled parts of the wig as it might damage it or worse, tangle them even more! Wet wig fibres are more delicate and can break easier compared to dry ones. So leave the tangles parts for later~
  6. Remove the wig from the pail and rinse it off with the spray head
  7. Squeeze the water out of the wig again and then place it in the Conditioner Pail/Sink. Again, give it a little swirl.
  8. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, if you are washing many wigs like me, while waiting you can do steps 1-4 for the next wig.
  9. Take out the wig from the Conditioner Pail/Sink and squeeze out the Conditioner water from the wig
  10. Rinse* the wig thoroughly.
Note: *when rinsing the wig with the wig head, point the nuzzle downwards and never upwards. This is so that the wig does not get tangled.

After washing the wig, place the wig on a wig stand etc idk haha..

I placed my wigs at various areas to dry because I only have 1 wig stand hahahaha
It takes about a day for the wigs to fully dry or if you are impatient, use a hair dryer to dry the wigs, including the wig "scalp areas" or the netting. Make sure the setting of the hair dryer is not too hot that it burns the wig.
Tadaaaaa! The wigs are dries after a day~

After drying, you will want to comb it!
Combing the wig starting from the bottom, working your way up~

Using a comb with large gaps between its teeth (if you have a wig comb it is best), comb the bottom part of the wig first. This time, use your fingers if needed, to untangle the wig. DO NOT use the comb with force to untangle the wig as the fibres might break and loosing hair on wig is not like on our heads where it will grow back! haha...
Slowly make your way up to to the top of the wig until the wig is fully untangled and is as good as brand new! :D






Tadaaaa~ My Nezumi's wig seems as good as new!
So there you have it! Wig washing~ Washing wigs might be tedious for some but I didn't face much trouble hahaha... have patience and treat the wigs like its your baby - the end result is your pretty wig! :D
